Whilst purchases from car dealers offer a consumer slightly more ‘rights’, it is still prudent to undertake your own due diligence when viewing a new set of wheels.

Rust is a killer of older cars. A vehicle that could otherwise be in good condition with good working mechanical parts could be condemned and taken off the road if there is excessive rust, or rust in particular areas (i.e. seatbelt mounts, structural areas) that make the driving of the vehicle potentially dangerous.

Driver aids are part and parcel of any new car nowadays. You wouldn’t batter an eyelid now if you buy a car with a reverse camera, or proximity sensors for when you’re too close to the car in front, and more recently, even cars that ‘park themselves’ seem to be becoming ‘the norm’.

Pothole season is nearly once against with us. The time of year when roads that seemed perfectly passable a month or two prior, suddenly seem to resemble rutted farm tracks or abandoned air fields, unfit for anything other than large 4×4’s or tractors.

People of a certain generation probably remember with fondness, or perhaps amusement, the pyschology of our parents when growing up in terms of the optimum time of day to leave for a long road trip in order to minimise delays and traffic. Being woken at 4am with a bag of sweets slung into one’s hand was the done thing in the 1970’s and 1980’s…but is it still (or was it ever?) the best time to leave for a journey?

Now that it we are well into September we are starting to see a lot of new drivers on the road because many learner drivers try to get their practice in during Summer when the weather is a little more predictable and the roads tend to be clear of rain and snow (plus, it’s an ideal time for students who passed their test during the long summer to make their own way to schools and universities).

The science behind automotive stopping distances is simple, in so much that the faster you go, the longer it takes to stop your vehicle. Knowing your stopping times and distances is essential to being a safe driver. However, the time that you need to stop your car does not include the average 1.5 seconds of thinking time to react.

Most countries have speed limits. Whether you consistently abide by them or regulary like to creep a few miles per hour above them, they are there to provide a maximum speed at which a vehicle can travel on a particular road. This article examines some different facts about speed limits including the different types of speed limits, why are they in place, and do they actually work? 

In our last 2 articles, we’ve covered how peak times change during the summer holidays for road travel, and some accidentally illegal things you may end up doing whilst driving. In this lastest article, we consider to look at how road travel changes in the summer holidays…including travel overseas. Taking your car abroad doesn’t need to be stressful, it just involves some organised planning. 

In our last article we went into detail to discuss how road travel changes (dramatically) in the summer, with a focus on how peak times change and what you can do to avoid them. Perhaps as a consequence in increased road traffic is the issue is that a lot of people will unintentionally break the law as they are travelling, and this happens more frequently in the summer as more people are on the roads.

2018 has so far been unusual in that many of us have, unusually, been experiencing a great British Summer. The last thing you want to be doing though when the weather is like it has been, is sat in a car in 30 degree heat, absolutely gridlock on the motorway.
